Great-great grandmother goes to school for first time aged 90

This proves it’s never too late to go back to school, even if you’re 90. Priscilla Sitienei decided to enrol in a Kenyan primary school nearly a century after she should have because her family couldn’t afford to send her when she was younger.

The ‘world’s oldest primary school student’ now sits next to her great-great-grandchildren, while learning several subjects, including English and PE.

‘I’d like to be able to read the Bible; I also want to inspire children to get an education,’ Sitienei told the BBC.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho ashamed by shock defeat to Bradford City

Jose Mourinho said he was ‘ashamed’ by Chelsea's ‘unacceptable’ FA Cup fourth-round defeat to League One Bradford City.

Mourinho caused a stir in the week by saying it would be a disgrace if they lost to Bradford, and he reaffirmed that belief after the match.

“I repeat the word that I used yesterday in case we lost - it's a disgrace. A sporting disgrace, but it's a disgrace,” he said.

No going back on February polls, Jega insists

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Friday, rejected the call for the postponement of the presidential election and declared that February 14 remains the date for the election.

Chairman of the commission, Professor Attahiru Jega,  made the declaration in Abuja, on Friday,  at a workshop organised by INEC on “Mitigation of Violence In Election” against the backdrop of the ongoing agitation  in some quarters that the polls should be postponed to enable INEC give all registered voters their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd), had, on Thursday in London, canvassed for the postponement of the polls and disclosed that he had made his view on the matter known to the Chairman of INEC. (Read Here)

However, speaking on the issue on Friday, Jega said at no time had the commission sat down to review the date of the election despite the challenges related to the distribution of the PVCs and insisted that the commission was working round the clock on ensuring all PVCs were distributed .

British Ebola nurse Pauline Cafferkey discharged from hospital

The hero British nurse who caught Ebola while in Sierra Leone has left hospital having made a complete recovery from the killer disease.

Pauline Cafferkey was declared free of the virus after more than three weeks in hospital, where she was critically ill for a time.

The nurse, 39, from Cambuslang, in South Lanarkshire, thanked staff at the Royal Free Hospital in London and put her recovery in part down to supplies of Irn Bru.

As she left hospital yesterday, she said: "I am just happy to be alive. I still don't feel 100 per cent, I feel quite weak, but I'm looking forward to going home."

Nigeria: Naira now goes for 208 to dollar

The naira, on Friday, depreciated against the dollar as it traded at N208 from the N191.50 it sold for on Monday, January 19.
 
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the new rate had made the naira to lose N16.50 within five days.

The CBN’s website, however, put the naira against the dollar at N167.50, while the pound sold for N253.20 and the euro stood at N193.89.

The development has resulted into speculation in the market and caused ripple effects on other currencies.

Australian Open 2015: Stan Wawrinka, Feliciano Lopez and Milos Raonic all win

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka continued his unobtrusive progress in the Australian Open to book his place in the last 16.

Wawrinka has yet to drop a set in Melbourne and enjoyed another straightforward victory in the third round, beating Finland's Jarkko Nieminen 6-4 6-2 6-4 on Rod Laver Arena.

The fourth seed sent down nine aces and won 90 per cent of points behind his first serve to set up a clash with Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the fourth round.

Premier League big guns Chelsea, Manchester City, Southampton and Tottenham all suffered shock home defeats in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho had said it would be a "disgrace" if the Premier League leaders lost at home to Bradford City and the Blues were duly humbled by the Sky Bet League One side who came from behind to snatch a sensational 4-2 victory at Stamford Bridge and end hopes of a ‘quadruple’ for the Londoners.

Manchester City, currently second behind Chelsea in the Premier League, were also sent crashing out of the FA Cup after losing 2-0 at home to Middlesbrough.

Mike Tyson wants a music career. The retired boxer was recently announced as a featured artist on the track, ‘Iconic’ along with Chance the Rapper on Madonna‘s new album, Rebel Heart. 

Tyson has revealed the experience makes him think he would be a great solo artist. 

He said: ‘Doing the song with Madonna makes me think this [music career] could really happen. Most guys that come in there drink a bunch of liquor or smoke 100 blunts. I just went in and boom, one take. Everyone thought it was cool.’

He said this while inaugurating a five-seater air-conditioned passenger inter-city rail transport system that will link Makurdi, Benue State with Port-Harcourt, Rivers State.

Jonathan, who was represented by Vice-President Namadi Sambo, said the country had witnessed transformation, especially in the transport sector during his administration.

They said that in spite of their support for the President, they had nothing to show for it.

AFCON 2015: Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan struck a dramatic late winner to defeat Algeria

In a game of very few chances, Gyan snatched an unlikely victory when he latched on to a long ball and angled in a drive in stoppage time. 

Algeria missed the only other clear chance when Nabil Bentaleb side-footed well wide from 12 yards on 20 minutes. 

The game had looked set to remain goalless until Gyan's late strike.

Twitter warns users to stop posting Instagram links, use its photo sharing tools instead

Twitter has told its most popular users to stop posting Instagram links.

Since 2012, Instagram pulled support for the functionality that showed Instagram photos within tweets. Since then, pictures posted from the Facebook-owned picture sharing site have shown up as links, which must then be opened in a browser or with a client.

A batch of Twitter’s high-profile users received a prompt telling them to post pictures directly through Twitter, so that they show up in their followers’ timelines, reports Mashable. The message was presented as an educational effort to show how to post in Twitter and so boost interaction on posts, Mashable said.

Drunk plane passenger who forced Virgin plane to turn around ordered to pay £26,000

A drunken Australian man who forced a Virgin plane to return back to Perth after threatening to ‘bring this plane down’ has been fined £26,000.

Brenden Tume was ordered to pay the sum to cover the cost of fellow passengers being put in a hotel and refuelling the plane, The Times reports.

The 23-year-old was already intoxicated when he boarded a Virgin Australia flight bound for Sydney from Perth. He fell asleep shortly after the aircraft took off.

He became abusive two hours later when flight staff tried to wake him for food and he found his bag had been moved to the cargo hold because it was too large for the overhead locker.

30 dead as Bangladesh political violence escalates

Police in Bangladesh are braced for more violence this weekend after arson attacks, protests, strikes and blockades in recent days left 30 people dead and hundreds more injured.

More than 7,000 people have been detained in the country’s worst bout of political violence since national elections a year ago in which the ruling Awami League was re-elected after a boycott by the opposition.

The latest protests have been called by Khaleda Zia, leader of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist party (BNP), who wants Sheikh Hasina, the prime minister, to resign and call fresh elections. Hasina has said her government will remain in office until her term ends in 2019.

Award-winning Nollywood actor and producer, Kunle Afolayan, is in high spirits as his movie, October 1, has banged a Netflix deal.

Netflix is one of the biggest video on-demand online streaming media companies in the world. They stream mostly to America and Europe.

Just last week, Kunle Afolayan won the award for Nollywood Man of the Year.

In an interview with The Nation, he said the movie would be sub-titled in 10 different languages and has been scheduled to be viewed in some film festivals.

A daredevil record-holder dubbed the ‘Iceman’ showed he can keep a cool head after scrambling to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in record time.

Wim Hof, 55, holds a whopping 26 Guinness World Records for extreme sports challenges, including running a full marathon above the Arctic circle wearing only a pair of shorts.

But father-of-five Wim, from Sittard, Holland, proved he has ice in his veins after his 18-strong climbing group scaled Africa’s highest mountain in a record time of 31 hours and 25 minutes.

Proud Wim said: “This year’s Kilimanjaro challenge was to show that a group of people without mountaineering experience could scale the mountain within 36 hours by using a specific breathing technique."

INEC says collection of PVCs to continue until February 8

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) which is currently ongoing in all the electoral wards in Nigeria to February 8, about a week before the conduct of the presidential election.

The Commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Cross River State, Dr Okey Ezeani, made the disclosure on Thursday while brainstorming with members of the State Inter-agency Advisory Committee on Voter Education (SICVEP).

Instagram pubic hair 'censorship' ignites sexism row

Instagram has ignited a "sexism" scandal after banning a fashion agency that posted a photo of two models with pubes peeking out of their bikinis.

The photo-sharing service gave an Australian firm called Sticks and Stones the boot because an image broke strict rules on nudity or sexual images.

However, Instagram has now changed its mind after admitting it "made a mistake".

The scandal came to light after agency director Ainsley Hutchence tweeted: "This photo got me deleted from Instagram. So I'm on Twitter now."

The five-year-old and his mother, Bola Fatumbi, from Gateshead, were last night being held in an immigration centre in London ahead of their scheduled deportation late last night.

The National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki(retd.), has canvassed for the postponement of next month’s elections to give the Independent National Electoral Commission time to distribute over 30 million outstanding Permanent Voter Cards to registered voters.

Dasuki, according to Reuters, said he had told the INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega,   that a postponement within the three months allowed by the law, would be a good idea.

But his advice was rejected by the electoral umpire and the opposition All Progressives Congress.

Snooker makes surprise bid for inclusion at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo

Snooker is making a surprise bid for inclusion in the programme for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

New legislation implemented in December by the International Olympic Committee now allows a host city to bring in a new sport on a one-off basis.

The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association (WPBSA) and World Confederation of Billiard Sports (WCBS) have joined forces and submitted a bid to make the Games in five years' time.

WPBSA chairman Jason Ferguson said: "Snooker has grown at unprecedented levels in recent times and it has been our belief for some time that we should be given our chance on the ultimate global platform for sport."

"In 2001 we delivered, with great success, our sport to the International World Games in Akita, Japan, a programme which has continued to this day."

Mrs. Jonathan, whom has being threatened by some youth groups planning to disgrace her if she attends the grand rally of the Peoples Democratic Party in Yenagoa on February 5 has bluffed the groups' threat.

Two youth groups – Bayelsa Youth Vanguard and the Mangrove Boys of Bayelsa – had, in different statements, issued in Abuja and Yenagoa, barred the President’s wife from accompanying her husband to the rally in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State capital.

The royal figure had been in the hospital since December, battling pneumonia.

His death was confirmed on state television early Thursday morning, Saudi time, with channels cutting to Koranic verses - an action often signifying the death of a top royal.

PDP says Buhari’s certificate forged

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation alleged on Thursday that the school certificate presented by the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was forged.

The Director of Media and Publicity of the organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, made the allegation at a press conference in Abuja.

He, however, added that the organisation had yet to contact the school that issued the certificate to either confirm or deny its authenticity.

APC accuses NCC, telecom companies of blocking campaign funding initiative

An initiative by the All Progressives Congress, APC, to raise campaign funds using SMS, ringtones, and scratch cards is being scuttled by the National Communications Commission, NCC, the party alleged Wednesday. 

At a press conference organized by the party, the APC said that the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP-led federal government is using state-owned institutions to stifle opposition.

“There seems to be an orchestrated plot to prevent us, the All Progressives Congress (APC), from using the new platforms of SMS, Ringtones and Scratch Card to raise funds for our electioneering campaign,” Lai Mohammed, the APC’s National Publicity Secretary said.

On Tuesday, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State had unveiled five platforms through which interested Nigerians can make monetary contributions to the Buhari-Osinbajo campaign.

Buhari Pledges To Restructure Army, Police, If Elected

The Presidential flag-bearer of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has promised to restructure the Nigeria Army and Police, if elected.

Buhari made the promise on Thursday in Gusau, Zamfara at the inauguration of his campaign.

He said that his plan, if materialised, would boost the efforts of the two security institutions to battle insurgency with renewed vigour.

Buahri said that the need to restructure the army and police became necessary because the enemies had become more and highly sophisticated in the use of weapons.

Niger Delta Youths Plan To Attack Buhari Over Stoning Of Jonathan's Convoy In Katsina

Following the alleged attack on the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) presidential campaign convoy in Katsina, a Niger Delta youth organization, called the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Thursday, threatened a retaliation attack against the campaign team of the presidential flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammad Buhari.

IYC, in a statement signed by its spokesman, Eric Omare, said that though the Ijaw youths have condemned the attack on Jonathan in Katsina, the decision to retaliate is based on the confirmed involvement of the APC and the insult on the people of the South-South region for the reception accorded Buhari during the party campaign tours.

"The stoning of President Jonathan was done by supporters of General Buhari during his campaign to Katsina State. The attack clearly shows the violent-prone [sic] and irresponsible nature of some of General Buhari’s supporters. Nigerians would also recall the burning of the campaign buses of President Jonathan by supporters of General Buhari at Jos last week," Omare said.

PDP, LP clash leaves two persons dead in Ebonyi

Political thugs attacked supporters of Labour Party (LP) in Ikwo and Ohaozara local government areas of Ebonyi State on Thursday, leaving at least two persons dead.

One brand new Hiace bus was burnt down and properties worth millions of niara were destroyed during the attack, which was blamed on the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Several others including the Ohaozara West candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Chukwu Obini, were brutalized following another round of attacks by some suspected thugs allegedly working for the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ohaozara and Ikwo Local Government Areas of Ebonyi State.

Real Madrid have won the race to sign Brazilian midfielder Lucas Silva from Cruzeiro, according to reports in Spanish newspaper Marca.

The newspaper suggests that Real have reached an agreement with Cruzeiro to sign the 21-year-old for a reported €15 million.

The European champions announced on Wednesday that they had reached an agreement with Stromsgodset to sign 16-year-old Norwegian forward Martin Odegaard, and Silva is likely to be their second signing of the transfer window.

Irate youths attack Jonathan at Bauchi Presidential rally

Pandemonium erupted on Thursday at the Ibrahim Babangida Square, Venue of the Peoples Democratic Party presidential campaign rally in Bauchi as angry youths reportedly pelted politicians at the event with dangerous objects like hammer, stones, slippers among other things.

It was gathered that the irate youths, who refused to reveal their grievances, destroyed some of the canopies and plastic chairs at the venue.

The ‘supporters’, who had, before the arrival of President Goodluck Jonathan and his entourage, chanted solidarity songs for the President and the PDP and marched round the venue with their drums and placards with the President’s picture, became unruly during the programme and began pelting dignitaries on the stand.

Although security operatives intervened to stop the thugs from disrupting the event, several vehicles coming out of the venue, belonging to the PDP presidential campaign team, were stoned while tyres were burnt.
