Accord Party adopts Jonathan as presidential candidate

The National Working Committee of the Accord Party, AP, Friday adopted President Goodluck Jonathan as its candidate for the February 14 Presidential election.

The party also announced its opposition to the shifting of the February 14 Presidential election.

Jega Being Forced To Announce Six-Week Postponement as President Jonathan Wants Him Sacked

Attahiru Jega, chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is close to bowing to fierce pressure by announcing a six-week postponement of the February general elections. However, even though Mr. Jega is all but certain to do the bidding of President Goodluck Jonathan by setting a latter date for the elections, sources in the Presidency insist that Mr. Jega will not survive as INEC chair much longer if plans by the Presidency to sack him materialize.

19 giant bombs discovered in Adamawa bush

THE police in Adamawa State have thwarted a plot by Boko Haram to attack Yola, the state capital, ahead of the general election.
 
The Commissioner of Police, Gabriel Adaji, who made the disclosure at a press conference, on Friday, in Yola, said policemen discovered 19 high-calibre bombs buried in a bush a few kilometres to the city.

Adaji said the discovery of the bombs and the location, in Song Local Government Area, followed a tip-off. He said the bombs, which were at 90 per cent completion stage, only required connections to batteries to cause what might have been conceived to be the worst explosion in the country.

The danger of posing with snakes as python nips in for a quick bite of six-times racing champ

A racing driver gets a nasty puncture when a python sinks its fangs into his hand. Six-time V8 Supercars champ Jamie Whincup, 32, was bitten while posing with the 3ft black-headed python and the series trophy he is defending this season. 

He said: "It was pretty painful. The snake just wanted to get out of there. It was getting rowdy then had a go."

11-year-old Girl charged for sexually assaulting fellow kids

An 11-year-old girl charged with sexually assaulting children was allowed to “buddy” infant pupils at her school, it has been claimed.

Police had to be called to the youngster’s school in Stirling, Scotland, after furious parents protested at the gates.

The girl is the subject of allegations which include being in the possession of hardcore pornography.

And after her 25-year-old brother, the father of one of the alleged victims, posted details on his Facebook page, parents reacted with outrage. The brother claimed he reported his sister over a year ago, but said she went on to “buddy” infants which could involve accompanying them to the toilet.

Fayose and Obanikoro deny Audio file alleging rigging in Ekiti 2014 Polls

An audio recording allegedly showing how the June 2014 Ekiti State governorship election was rigged, has been released online.

The recording, which was on Sahara Reporters, purportedly captured the voices of the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, a military general who was in charge of the election, Senator Iyiola Omisore and former Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, in a meeting where they allegedly gave directives to the military to favour the Peoples Democratic Party.

But in a swift reaction to the development, Fayose said he never held any meeting with anyone to rig election. In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, on Friday, the governor described the audio clip as a new calculated attempt by the All Progressives Congress to discredit the election results.

Mourinho calls for FFP control

AFCON: Morocco handed two AFCON ban

 
Morocco have been fined and suspended from the next two Africa Cup of Nations for pulling out of hosting this year's tournament.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has also been fined 1m US dollars and ordered to pay 9.12m US dollars in damages to the Confederation of African Football and their partners, CAF said in a statement.

Morocco had been due to host the tournament, but requested a postponement because of fears over the Ebola outbreak on the African continent. Equatorial Guinea stepped in at short notice to stage the event.

Yemen's Houthi rebels take over government in coup

Yemen's Shia Houthi rebels have announced that they have dissolved parliament and installed a five-member "presidential council" which will form a transitional government to govern for two years.

In a televised statement on Friday from the Republican Palace in the capital, Sanaa, the rebel group said that it would set up a transitional national council of 551 members to replace the dissolved legislature.

AFCON 2015: Equatorial Guinea football federation fined after crowd trouble

The Equatorial Guinea football federation has been fined £65,500 by the Confederation of African Football following the crowd trouble which overshadowed the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final between Equatorial Guinea and Ghana on Thursday. (Read Here)

The host nation’s governing body has also been ordered to meet the cost of treatment for the Ghana supporters who were injured by flying missiles during the game at the Estadio de Malabo which Ghana won 3-0.

D’banj expresses readiness to work with Don Jazzy

NNPC to refund $1.48bn to federation account

 
The recently concluded forensic audit carried out by PriceWaterhouseCoopers on unremitted funds due to the Federation Account has indicted the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC). 

Both organisations are to refund at least $1.48 billion to the Federation Account.

Zinedine Zidane shapes up as a future coach of Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane is shaping up as a future coach of Real Madrid, present incumbent Carlo Ancelotti said on Friday.

Zidane, who is currently in charge of Real's reserve side Castilla, "has all the qualities" required to take the the helm of the club, Ancelotti insists.

After a difficult start of the season, Castilla are top of Spain's third tier league.

"I enjoy Zidane's work, he's doing very well in his first year in charge," Ancelotti said. "He's taken Castilla to first place and he needs to keep up the good work."

Pope Francis builds public showers and a barbershop for the homeless of Rome

 
Pope Francis is offering the homeless population of Vatican City a shower and haircut.

On Friday the Pope's grand renovation of the St Peter's Square public bathrooms was unveiled, and it included the addition of a barber shop.

It was first announced last week. The "homeless pilgrims" for whom this was designed can access the showers every day but Wednesday, when the piazza is reserved for the pope's general audience.

Clients will be given a free toiletry kit — soap, deodorant, toothpaste, razor, shaving cream and even fresh pair of underwear.

Louis van Gaal to contest FA charge

 
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal says he will contest a Football Association disrepute charge over comments he made after last month's FA Cup trip to Cambridge United.

Van Gaal was charged by the governing body for remarks which 'allege and/or imply bias on the part of the match referee and/or bringing the game into disrepute'.

After the match at the Abbey Stadium, which ended 0-0, van Gaal said: "You have seen the referee. It's always the same. Everywhere I have coached these games - and I have coached them also with other clubs - it's always the same."

Lagos declares Friday work-free day for civil servants

Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola has declared tomorrow, Friday February 6 as work free day to enable public servants in the state collect their Permanent Voters Card, PVCs.

This is coming barely 48 hours after Niger, Imo and Edo States declared public holidays for same exercise.

Klopp will not resign Borussia Dortmund position despite relegation threat

Jurgen Klopp insists he will not quit as Borussia Dortmund head coach despite the threat of relegation.

Dortmund remain rooted to the foot of the Bundesliga table after losing 1-0 at home to 10-man Augsburg on Wednesday.

The defeat is the 11th of the season for the 2013 Champions League finalists and led to some of the players apologising to fans after the final whistle.

But Klopp, who took over at Dortmund in 2008, insisted he has no plans to walk away, saying: "I can rule out resigning. After only two games this year, the tank isn't completely empty."

France sends military advisers to Nigeria’s border

FRANCE has sent military advisers to Niger’s southern border with Nigeria to help coordinate military action by regional powers fighting the Islamist group, Boko Haram, a French army official said on Thursday.

The deployment was announced as war planes pounded Boko Haram positions just over the border in Nigeria, a resident in the Niger town of Bosso said and hundreds of Chadian troops massed at the frontier to prepare an attack.

Chad has sent about 2,500 troops as part of efforts to take on the militant group, which has intensified its fight to set up a breakaway Islamist state in Nigeria and has staged cross-border raids. Chadian troops crossed into Nigeria this week from Cameroon, on the Southern side of Lake Chad.

FG announces plan for 3-hour Abuja–Lagos speed rail project

 
The Federal Government has announced that plans have reached an advanced stage for a three hour high speed train project connecting Lagos and Abuja.This was disclosed by the Minister of Transport, Senator Idris Umar, while speaking at the public presentation of a book, ‘Showcasing Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s Monumental Strides.'

The Economist endorses Buhari

Influential United Kingdom-based magazine, The Economist, says the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is more competent than President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party.

The highly respected magazine in its editorial published in its current edition and titled, ‘Former dictator is a better choice than a failed president,’ said Nigeria was unfortunate to have both Buhari and Jonathan vying for the Presidency. It, however, said that out of the two, Buhari was a better candidate.

Asari-Dokubo invited over inflammatory statements —DSS

THE Department of State Services (DSS), said on Thursday, that it had invited Mr Asari Dokubo, an ex-Niger Delta militant, several times over recent inflammatory statements credited to him.

The spokesperson of the DSS, Marilyn Ogar, said this on Thursday while responding to questions at a news conference organised by the National Information Centre.

“First of all, whatever is the operational procedure that we take after we have issued out warnings, we do not make them public.’’

“And I want you to recollect that Asari Dokubo has been brought into the office – DSS, a couple of times.’’

Jonathan’s supporters demand Jega’s resignation

Supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan have called for the resignation and arrest of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega.

The supporters, under the aegis of the Southern Nigeria Peoples Assembly, led by a one-time information minister, Chief Edwin Clark, made the demand at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.

Nigeria 2015 Polls: Youth arrested buying PVCs in Sokoto

Some young men were on Wednesday arrested over suspicion of buying Permanent Voters Cards, PVC, in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

A source in the town, who declined to be named for security reasons, revealed that the residents of Tambuwal town apprehended Abdu Dankuturu, Amo Masaurari, Dantonka Maikada, Kabiru Modibbo, Dantani Hulkwui and Danbala Gyarge after they were seen buying PVs from some housewives.

“They were paying N2, 000 for each PVC and about 400 cards were found on them upon arrest,” he said.

Injured Tiger Woods withdraws at Torrey Pines

Tiger Woods has withdrawn from the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in California because of apparent back pain, the PGA Tour has announced. 

Woods, 39, withdrew after only 11 holes of his first round on Thursday.

The 14-time major champion was two over par when he spoke to his playing partners and walked gingerly off the North Course and into a waiting car.

Jonathan does not deserve a second term –Soyinka

Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, says President Goodluck Jonathan   does not deserve a second term.

He told a gathering of youths at a programme titled ‘Vision of the Child’ in Lagos on Thursday, that he had 60 reasons why Jonathan should not   be returned to office on February 14 when the presidential election would hold in the country.

Although Soyinka did not list the 60 reasons, he was specific on one: The April 14 abduction of over 200 schoolgirls by Boko Haram insurgents from their hostel in Chibok, Borno State.

“I will not vote and I will not encourage anyone to vote for the continuation of this government, simply because your colleagues numbering over 200 were kidnapped,” he said.

AFCON 2015: Ghana in final amid crowd trouble - Photos

Crowd trouble forced a 30-minute interruption of the Africa Cup of Nations semi-final between Ghana and Equatorial Guinea.

Ghana fans massed behind a goal post after 82 minutes of the match as they appeared to seek refuge from missiles that were being thrown at them.

Bottles rained down as police battled to gain control, while a helicopter hovered over the stadium in Malabo.

Nigerian top striker, Emenike says he was cursed not to score goals

Emmanuel Emenike has made a stunning claim, that his three-month goal drought, was because a spell was cast on him.

The Nigeria and Fenerbahce striker went almost three months without scoring for his Turkish club and has now blamed bad luck for the barren run.

Speaking to Turkish newspaper Milliyet, the powerful frontman conceded that “something is wrong”.

“My energy is not right, something is wrong, I just need a goal to get back to form,” he said.

Harry Redknapp has resigned his position as manager of QPR

Harry Redknapp has announced his resignation as manager of Premier League strugglers QPR.
 
The veteran boss says he is quitting his post because he will undergo knee replacement surgery in the coming weeks.

The 67-year-old took charge at Loftus Road in November 2012 but informed Chairman Tony Fernandes that he was resigning on Tuesday morning.

And QPR have announced that Les Ferdinand and Chris Ramsey have been placed in temporary charge of the team until further notice.

Redknapp has been under pressure this season and leaves with QPR second-bottom of the Premier League, having not earned a single point away from home all season.

Redknapp said: "I have had such a fantastic time at QPR. I would like to thank the Board, the players and all my staff, and especially the supporters, who have been absolutely fantastic to me since I arrived at the club for their tremendous support."

Anderson joins Internacional from Manchester United

Manchester United midfielder Anderson has signed for Brazilian side Internacional on a four-year contract.

The 26-year-old joined United for £26m in 2007, but leaves Old Trafford on a free transfer after falling out of favour in recent years.

Anderson won four Premier League titles, the Champions League, two League Cups and the FIFA Club World Cup in eight seasons with the club.

Rap Mogul "Suge" Knight Rushed to Hospital Following Plea in Fatal Hit-and-Run

 
Hip-hop mogul Marion "Suge" Knight was taken to a hospital after suffering a medical emergency in a courthouse lockup after pleading not guilty to murder and other charges in a hit-and-run case, officials said.

Knight faced charges in court on Tuesday of murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run in the death of a man last week at a Compton burger stand. (Read here)

The next court date, a bail review hearing, is schedule for Feb. 9.

He pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning to four felony counts, which include murder in the death of 55-year-old Terry Carter, "attempted, willful, deliberate and premeditated murder" involving 51-year-old victim Cle "Bone" Sloan, plus two charges of hit-and-run. Knight's attorney, James Blatt, said Knight accidentally ran over the men as he tried to escape a vicious attack.

Osinbajo says VP’s office under APC govt will not be a ‘spare tyre’

The vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has said the office of the vice president, under the APC government, will not be a spare tyre.

Osinbajo said the party had made adequate plans to ensure that the National Economic Council, which is under the office of the vice president, was made a vibrant body, in line with the provisions of the constitution.

Court to hear suit on Buhari’s eligibility Feb 9

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday slated February 9, to commence hearing in the suit seeking to disqualify the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari, from contesting the presidential election.
 
A legal practitioner, Max Ozoaka, had, in a suit filed last week, asked the court to stop Buhari from contesting the presidential election on the ground that the information contained in his INEC Form 001 is false.

When the matter came up on Monday, the trial judge, Justice Ademola Adeniyi, granted Ozoaka’s request for substituted service on the APC presidential candidate before fixing Monday, next week, for hearing of the case.

Lewis Hamilton to pen a new three-year deal with Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton will sign a new three-year deal with Mercedes worth at least £60m in 'weeks rather than months', according to Fleet Street.

The reigning world champion was spotted having rather public negotiations with Silver Arrows' bosses in the Jerez paddock on Sunday as the first pre-season test of 2015 got underway.

Hamilton is out of contract at the end of the season, but revealed it was his decision to put contract talks on hold around the time of the Russian Grand Prix last year, despite knowing of interest from Fernando Alonso.

However, in The Daily Telegraph, Daniel Johnson is not as confident and speculates that Ferrari could still be an option for Hamilton.

Nigeria: Police, politicians to meet for another peace accord —I.G

THE Police, on Monday, said that it would bring together the various political parties and their candidates to sign another peace accord, ahead the February elections.

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr Suleiman Abba, said this shortly before he held a closed door meeting with Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Command Commissioners of Police at the Force Headquarters.

Liverpool's Philippe Coutinho agrees new contract of almost £70k a week

Nigeria President, Goodluck Jonathan escapes a suicide bomber attack close to rally venue

A lone suicide bomber blew herself up near the Gombe Stadium, venue of President Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign in Gombe State on Monday.

Before the incident which occurred minutes after the rally ended, suspected assailants threw explosives at three high courts in Port Harcourt, Degema and Isiokpo in Rivers State. They also vandalised another court in Omoku.

The Gombe bomber killed two passers-by and injured 18 others while the car used by her was engulfed by fire.
