Ateke Tom to Buhari: Don’t scrap amnesty programme

A former leader of the Niger Delta Vigilante, High Chief Ateke Tom, has urged the President-elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), not to abandon the Amnesty Programme put in place by ex-President Musa Yar’Adua and continued by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Ateke Tom, who congratulated Buhari on his victory at the poll, also appealed to him to collaborate with leaders in the Niger Delta to develop the oil -rich region.

PSG hit out at Zlatan ban

Paris St-Germain have deplored the "severity" of the four-match ban given to Zlatan Ibrahimovic given his "immense contribution to French football".

The 33-year-old Swedish star was hit with the suspension by the Professional Football League (LFP) for his comments attacking France and its referees.

But PSG have countered in a statement, saying: "The club deplores the severity with which its player has been sanctioned, given his immense contribution to the image of French football, both in France and internationally."

Van Persie out of City clash

Robin van Persie will not be available for selection for Manchester United’s clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

Van Persie had declared that he would be fit for the clash earlier in the week.

Red Bull could quit F1 involvement

Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz has confirmed his company would pull the plug on their F1 involvement if his teams can’t access a “competitive engine”.

In the latest warning from the former world champions in the wake of their uncompetitive start to the 2015 season, Mateschitz has reaffirmed comments first made by his advisor Helmut Marko after the Australian GP that the team would consider withdrawing if they became “totally dissatisfied” with F1.

Mercedes may split Nico and Hamilton strategies

Toto Wolff admits Mercedes may be forced to start splitting Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg's strategies to fend off the challenge from Ferrari. The Silver Arrows tried to keep both drivers on the same strategy in 2014 to ensure neither felt like their team-mate was being favoured by the pitwall.

However, after losing out to Ferrari in a straight fight in Malaysia, Wolff admits their strategy hand may now be forced.

“We have always considered if it was about winning the race about splitting the strategy with one car,” he told Sky Sports F1.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been handed a four-match ban by the French Football Association. The Swedish star launched an explosive foul-mouthed rant against referee Lionel Jaffredo following Paris Saint-Germain's 3-2 defeat to Bordeaux last month.

Tiger Woods believes he can win a 15th major this week despite trailing leader Jordan Spieth by nine shots after day one of the Masters at Augusta. 

The 39-year-old, who last won a major in 2008 and took a break from the sport to work on his game earlier this year ended his opening round one over par. 

"I'm still in it. I'm only nine back. We have a long way to go," the four-time Masters champion said. "I felt good out there. I hit the ball well enough to shoot three under par."

Lewis Hamilton was fastest in opening practice for the Chinese Grand Prix on Friday ahead of Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel.

The defending champion lapped the 5.451km Shanghai International Circuit in a time of 1:39.033 to go 0.541s faster than his Mercedes team-mate, with Malaysian GP winner Sebastian Vettel third fastest for Ferrari.

No guarantee of nuclear deal - Iran

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has cautioned against seeing a preliminary agreement on his country's nuclear programme as the "guarantee" of a final deal with world powers.

Last week Iran and world powers reached a framework agreement on the issue. But Iran also wants sanctions lifted "on the first day" of the final deal's implementation, against US wishes.

Jose Mourinho reckons he is now even more special. Mourinho announced himself as the Special One when he first arrived at Chelsea in 2004 and he is on the verge of proving it once again this season.

Mourinho is closing in on his third Premier League crown, having already won the Capital One Cup in March. Chelsea need 15 more points to win the league, a title which would be Mourinho's 22nd in just 15 years as a manager.

Mourinho said: "I think. I have a problem, which is I'm getting better at everything related to my job since I started."

APC to ratify Buhari’s ministerial list

Court refuses to stop Fayose’s impeachment

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose and his deputy, Kolapo Olusola, have raced to a Federal High Court in Abuja to stop the 19 All Progressives Congress members of the state House of Assembly from impeaching them.

Fayose and Olusola, in the ex parte application, asked for an interim order stopping the impeachment notice served on them and the moves to remove them from office.

Rather than granting the prayers for interim injunction, Justice Mohammed ordered the defendants in the suit, including the Speaker of the House, Adewale Omirin, and the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, to appear in his court on April 16.

Floyd Mayweather said he will wear a mouthguard embedded with diamonds, gold and $100 bills for his fight with Manny Pacquiao next month.

The piece costs £16,800 and is designed by Dr Lee Gause, a New York dentist who often flies to Las Vegas to fit the American’s mouthguard before fights.

16 parties storm INEC, demand Rivers REC’s removal

Sixteen political parties from Rivers State, Nigeria, stormed the national headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja on Tuesday, asking for the immediate removal of the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ms. Gesilia Khan.

They said the REC must not be allowed to conduct the Saturday governorship and the state House of Assembly elections in the state.

They also called for the removal of the Head of Operations at INEC, Mr. Bocco Ekong, for allegedly conniving with the REC to rig the elections in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party.

Hamilton unsure over new Mercedes deal

Lewis Hamilton has admitted he doesn’t know when his new contract with Mercedes will be signed, describing the unfolding saga as “a pain in the backside”.

Hamilton’s current deal with the Silver Arrows expires at the end of the season and the 30-year-old, who represented himself in negotiations with the team’s hierarchy over the winter, told Sky Sports two weeks ago that a deal had been agreed in principle.

But ahead of this weekend’s Chinese GP, an exasperated-sounding Hamilton admitted that the deal had now hit a snag and his new contract remains unsigned.

Forgive Akiolu and move on, Buhari tells Igbo

The President-elect, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has urged the Ndigbo and other non-indigenes in Lagos State to forgive all that has been said against them and move on for the sake of peace.

Buhari said this during a rally in Lagos to address the comments made by the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu.

Akiolu has been under fire since Monday when he reportedly threatened the Ndigbo in Lagos to either vote for the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, or perish in the lagoon. (Here)

Anonymous INEC Staff Allege Governor Akpabio bought Akwa Ibom Presidential Election Result

 
The presidential and National Assembly elections in Akwa Ibom State were systematically rigged, an anonymous group in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) alleges in a petition to the chairman, Attahiru Jega.

And results for next Saturday’s election have already been written, the group, “Concerned Staff of INEC, Akwa Ibom State”, said in a petition dated April 6.

They said that the March 28 hoax was perpetrated by the State Governor, Goodswill Akpabio, the Resident Electoral Commissioner and the Commissioner of Police, in league with some staff of INEC, and detailed how the election was rigged state-wide.

Van Persie declares himself fit for derby

Robin van Persie has passed himself fit for Sunday's Manchester derby after seven weeks out. Van Persie has not played since damaging ankle ligaments during Manchester United's Premier League win at Swansea on February 21.

The Holland striker was expected to return against Aston Villa at the weekend only for Louis van Gaal to rule him out on the eve of the game, but he returned to full training on Wednesday.

CAF picks Gabon to host 2017 AFCON

Gabon have been chosen to host the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals. The 2012 co-hosts won a vote by the Confederation of African Football's executive committee in Cairo on Wednesday ahead of Algeria and Ghana. 

It will be the second time as hosts for the country, which is located on the west coast of Africa, having previously shared duties with Equatorial Guinea.

Buhari, Obasanjo hold secret meeting in Lagos

The President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, and former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday held a secret meeting in Lagos.

It was learnt that Buhari and other All Progressives Congress leaders had come to Lagos for a thank you visit and to campaign for the party’s governorship candidate, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, but had a meeting with Obasanjo before setting out to campaign in the Orile area of the state.

George said it was unfortunate that Akiolu had openly taken sides with a political party. He urged the monarch to relinquish his crown and go into partisan politics if he could not remain neutral.

Welcome to Kanamara Matsuri, aka the Festival of the Steel Phallus. Known to locals as 'Penis Festival', the annual event in Kawasaki, Japan, does exactly what you would expect of a such an event.

Held on April 5 this year, the event at the Kanayama Shrine celebrates the male appendage and fertility.

China chemical plant hit by explosion

An explosion has ripped through a chemical plant in south-eastern China's Fujian province, sparking a major fire. The blast occurred on Monday evening at the plant in Zhangzhou. State news agency Xinhua reported one injury.

The plant produces paraxylene (PX), a flammable chemical used in polyester and plastics manufacturing.

Vintage airplane explodes MID-AIR after crash above classic Easter airshow

A vintage aircraft spectacularly exploded mid-air after its brakes failed, causing it to crash. Thousands of spectators got more than they bargained for when they lined up to watch the renowned Omaka Classic Fighters Airshow in New Zealand.

At the beginning of the biannual show, the vintage Focke Wulf 190 crashed when its right brake failed upon landing. Although the aircraft was damaged beyond return, pilot Frank Parker walked away unharmed, the Malborough Express reported.

Turkish Super Lig suspended after Fenerbahce team bus gun attack

Top-flight football in Turkey has been suspended for a week following the gun attack on Fenerbahce’s team bus on Saturday.

Although the players escaped unharmed, the driver was injured after the bus was attacked in the city of Trabzon while making its way to the airport after Saturday 5-1 victory at Caykur Rizespor.

Freed Al-Jazeera journalists won’t withdraw suit against Army

Two Al Jazeera journalists who were on Sunday released by the Nigerian military after 12 days in detention have vowed to maintain their suits they initially filed while they were in custody.

Messrs Ahmed Idris and Ali Mustapha had through their lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), filed a fundamental human rights enforcement suit demanding their release from unlawful detention where they had been held since March 24 in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Falana, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone on Monday, said in view of the release of his clients, he might have to amend the suit already filed before the Federal High Court in Abuja, to seek for damages.
