Morocco appeal Nations Cup ban

Morocco has appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport about its expulsion from the next two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations. 

The North African country was banned from both the 2017 and 2019 tournaments for failing to host the 2015 edition. Morocco was also fined $1m and ordered to pay $9 million in compensation for pulling out at the last minute due to fears over the spread of Ebola. 

Moroccan officials had called for the tournament to be delayed as concerns over the potential spread of the virus grew, and then declined to host it when that delay was not granted. 

New tattoo removal cream invented, only costs £3 and doesn't hurt

A Canadian student has developed a new method of tattoo removal that could save people a good deal of pain and expense, allowing them to get rid of regrettable tats by simply rubbing cream into them.

"When comparing it to laser-based tattoo removal, in which you see the burns, the scarring, the blisters, in this case, we've designed a drug that doesn't really have much off-target effect," 27-year-old PhD student and inventor Alec Falkenham told CBC.

"We're not targeting any of the normal skin cells, so you won't see a lot of inflammation. In fact, based on the process that we're actually using, we don't think there will be any inflammation at all and it would actually be anti-inflammatory."

Nigeria 2015 Polls: Jega to appear before Senate on Wednesday over postponement of elections

The Nigerian Senate has summoned the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Attahiru Jega, over the postponement of the country’s general elections.

The Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, raised the motion for Mr. Jega to be invited to explain why the general elections which were scheduled for February were postponed to March and April.

Mr. Jega was also invited to show how cards readers would be used at the elections. The INEC chairman is expected to attend the session with the card readers to prove its efficiency to the lawmakers.

Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress Senators questioned why Mr. Jega should be invited.

Food prices soaring despite Nigeria’s “agric revolution” – Bureau of Statistics

In spite of Nigerian government’s claim of unprecedented revolution in agriculture, latest performance figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics show that food prices remained high since last December.

Highlights of the current consumer price index published by the bureau show that food sub-index rose by 9.2 percent in January 2015.

According to the report, the figure remained roughly unchanged from price increases recorded in December 2014.

Japan pledges $15.5m to fight 'terror' in Middle East and Africa

Japan has officially announced $15.5m to fight "terrorism" in the Middle East and Africa, as Tokyo tries to demonstrate its resolve despite the murder of two citizens by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group.

The amount, which was first reported in Japanese newspapers on Sunday, doubles the $7.5m in assistance that Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida pledged during a visit to Brussels in January.

Kishida said in a statement on Tuesday that the aid was part of Japan's effort to support "counter-terrorism capacity building assistance in the Middle East/Africa", including border control, investigation and development of legal systems.

PDP will not miss Obasanjo – Anenih

Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s successor as Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih, on Monday reacted to Obasanjo’s decision to dump the PDP, insisting that the party “leaders will not miss” his departure.

Anenih, who spoke briefly with State House Correspondents after meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan, admitted that it was within Obasanjo’s right to dump the party.

The People’s Democratic Party, PDP, has said it is deeply saddened by the exit of former President Olusegun Obasanjo from the party. 

The PDP’s reaction was contained in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, who said despite Obasanjo’s exit, the party remains focused to ensuring President Goodluck Jonathan is re-elected. 

The statement reads: “The leadership Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has received the news of the decision of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to withdraw his membership of our great party. We have also carefully examined the circumstances and the reasons adduced for this unfortunate decision.” 

Fayose defeats Fayemi again at Appeal Court

THE Court of Appeal, Abuja Division, on Monday, dismissed the appeal filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State and upheld the victory of Governor Ayo Fayose at the June 21, 2014 governorship election in the state. 

Fayose, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, emerged winner, having defeated Dr Kayode Fayemi of the APC in all the 16 local councils of the state.

Nigeria 2015 Polls: INEC to prosecute voters with fake PVCs

The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, in Oyo State, Amb. Rufus Akeju, has warned that any voter who is caught with fake Permanent Voter Card, PVC, during the general elections will be prosecuted.

Akeju, who made this known while speaking with newsmen in Ibadan on Sunday, vowed that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, would not tolerate any form of rigging during the elections.

Jose Mourinho says Chelsea have moved on since losing in Paris last season

Jose Mourinho has promised Paris Saint-Germain fans they will see a different Chelsea side to the one that lost 3-1 at the Parc des Princes last season.

The sides met in the quarter-finals of the competition last season, with PSG winning at home before being knocked out on the away goals rule after losing 2-0 in the return leg at Stamford Bridge.

Luiz has claimed Chelsea are a better team since he left but Mourinho refused to be drawn on that.

"I'm not here to comment what opponents say, even being David. I don't want to comment,” he said.

The Defence Headquarters has described former President Olusegun Obasanjo as an embarrassment to the military institution.

The Defence Headquarters made the comment in a statement posted on its Facebook page while reacting to a statement credited to the former President that the General Elections were postponed to enable the President to use the Service Chiefs for tenure extension in an electronic mail on Monday.

The Defence authorities accused the former President of politicising serious national security and military issues.

Jonathan and Buhari are ‘problematic’ candidates, says Soyinka

Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has criticised the two frontline candidates in the March 28 presidential election, President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party and Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) of the All Progressives Congress.

Soyinka, in an interview with the BBC on Monday, insisted that the political parties should have come up with far better options than the two leading candidates.

He described President Jonathan, who is running for a second term and the opposition leader, Buhari, as “problematic candidates.”

Obasanjo finally dumps PDP after 16yrs tearing membership card

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Monday finally dumped the ruling Peoples Democratic Party by asking that his membership card be torn.

But almost two hours after he did that, the Ogun State PDP executive council, headed by Chief Adebayo Dayo, announced his expulsion from the party over what it termed his “series of unabated anti-party activities.”

The former President was hosting the executive and members of the party from Ward 11, Abeokuta North at his Hilltop residence when he announced that he was dumping the PDP.

A reporter with Reuters News Agency, Tife Owolabi, taken in for questioning by operatives of the Department of State Security Service in Yenagoa,​ has been freed.

Mr. Owolabi, who confirmed his release on Monday, said his personal computer, tablet device, cameras and external hard drives and memory cards remained in the custody of the DSS. He was freed Saturday.​

Governor, Olusegun Mimiko yesterday denied ongoing rumours that his sibling, Prof. Olufemi Mimiko was eyeing the chairmanship position of the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC). Prof Mimiko recently completed his term as Vice Chancellor, Adekunle Ajasin University(AAU)Akungba-Akoko.

However, speculations were rifed over the move by the presidency to sack the incumbent INEC Chairman, Prof Attahiru Jega and replace him with Prof. Mimiko (Read here), using the connection of his brother with President Goodluck Jonathan.
