An intervention by the Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, has seen the Chris Giwa-led Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, board withdrawing its case against the football house at the Jos High Court.
The case previously filed by Obinna Ogba and Yahaya Adama; both of the Giwa-led board challenged the September 30 NFF elections that brought in Amaju Pinnck and other excos at an elective congress held in Warri.
However, with the intervention of Mr. Jonathan, the case was withdrawn and presiding Justice Allagoa moved swiftly to strike out the suit on Thursday.
This latest development will sure bring relief to many even as the ultimatum given by FIFA to Nigeria on the said matter was near expiration.
FIFA, in its last letter to Nigeria, was quite blunt; warning that the country may end up with a lengthy ban if certain conditions, particularly the withdrawal of cases against the NFF at civil courts were not met.
“Under these circumstances and in order to give Nigeria football a last opportunity to avoid a lengthy suspension, we inform you that if by midday October 31 Nigerian time we have not received proof that the case has definitively being withdrawn from court and that the board elected on September 30, 2014 is able to carry out its activities without any hindrance, we will refer the case to the FIFA Emergency Committee for the implementation of suspension,” part of the FIFA letter from Zurich sent earlier in the week read.
With the latest development, Nigeria looks set to escape a backlash from the world football governing even as many hope the fragile peace will not be threatened again. ...PremiumTimes
