A politician has been arrested for stealing £3million from social services funds to lavish on his prostitute girlfriend.
Married father-of-three Mario Zelaya, 46, is accused of stealing from
social security funds to buy his mistress expensive gifts including two
apartments, a house on the beach, two SUV cars, perfumes, watches,
clothes and purses. He also paid her between £3,000 and £4,000 in cash each month, it is claimed.
Zelaya was until recently director of the Honduran Institute for
Social Security, and became infatuated with 28-year-old Natalia
Ciuffardi after meeting her on a business trip to Chile.
He had then showered her with gifts and promised to help her leave
the Platinum Club brothel in the capital Santiago de Chile where she was
working as a high-class prostitute charging £300 an hour and also
working in the same place as a stripper.
She said: "He was very charming and I had no reason to suspect that
the money he was giving me was not his own. How my supposed to know that
he had been stealing it?"
"I fell in love with him and when I became pregnant it was logical
for me to leave and start a new life with the man who I thought I knew."
She said on the first night they met, he had spent £12,000 alone to impress her with his wealth.
She said he would spend one week in every month with her, and
apparently had been lying to his Nicaraguan wife Michelle Alejandra
