FIFA President, Sepp Blatter(L) and CAF President, Issa Hayatou(R) |
The president of the Confederation of African Football Issa Hayatou
is working round the clock to change a long-standing age-limit rule to
allow him run again in the next polls.
The present rule does not permit anyone older than 70 to contest for
the post, but Hayatou, whose current term expires in 2017 when he would
be 70, wants another term.
Hayatou’s allies are taking inspiration from a similar change at the
FIFA level, where there are now no age-restrictions in contesting the
presidency.
“FIFA does not have age limits for its committee members so CAF wants
to bring this in line with them,” executive committee member Kwesi
Nyantakyi, who is also the FA boss of Ghana, said.
This eighth term would keep the Cameroonian - who has been in charge
since 1988 in office until 2021 and the change is expected to be made at
the body’s next congress in Cairo in April.
