Rafa Nadal suffered a three-set defeat by Fernando Verdasco to lose his third round match at the Miami Open.
Fellow Spaniard Verdasco battled through a tough opening set
and seemed to be out of the contest after being brushed aside in the
second.
But the second seed wobbled again in the third set and
although he saved one match point when serving at 5-2, Verdasco stayed
strong on his service to shock his compatriot in a contest that lasted
two hours 15 minutes with 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory.
“It’s a huge victory, and it's always really nice to feel it in a
packed stadium… in a very important tournament like this one and playing
against one of the best players in history,” said Verdasco. “At the
end, you just try to enjoy the moment.”
“Today was a good day. I played good and I won… I'm very happy, and
now I just need to try to rest and be ready for the next one.”
The 31-year-old Spaniard awaits the winner of No. 23 seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Juan Monaco in the Round of 16.
