Baby twins run over by 'drunk driver 10 times over the limit' survive crash

Baby twins were recovering in hospital today after being run down in their pram by a 'drunk driver 10 times over the limit'.

The one-year-old toddlers were being taken for a walk in the park with their mum, when the alleged drunk came hurtling towards them.

But as the horrified mum tried to drag her twins to safety, the car slammed into the pram, sending both toddlers flying into air.

As the mum covered her bleeding and crying tots, passers-by phoned the police and an ambulance.

Stunned eye witness Marina Matveeva, 54, said: "I was going for a walk when I saw this car suddenly go onto the grass and head towards the mum and her children. When it hit them, the stroller went spinning through the air and one of the babies landed very near to the car's rear wheel."

"The driver was about to reverse, but the mother screamed so loudly he stopped. If he hadn’t [stopped] he would have surely crushed the baby. She threw her body over theirs to protect them."

The babies were taken to hospital where their condition is said to be stable. The incident occurred in the city of Sevastopol in Crimea on May 30.

The driver was given a breath test and found to be 10 times over the limit. He did not have a driving license with him saying that he had lost it, although he was able to hand over papers for the car. He said he had skidded off the road to avoid a car coming towards him.

The drunk driver now faces charges of drinking and driving as well as endangering the lives of others.
