Jose Mourinho insists he is powerless to stop Petr Cech joining Arsenal. Mourinho
has admitted for the first time that the decision is “not in my hands”
as he gave a huge hint that Chelsea will be willing to sell to their
bitter rivals.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger wants a new No1 keeper this summer and Cech - who is 33 this week - is ready to move after losing his place to Thibaut Courtois.
Chelsea
boss Mourinho, in an interview with talkSPORT’s Alan Brazil Breakfast
show, said: “If it’s in my hands he would never go, would never go to
big clubs with fantastic teams. Big candidates to win the Premier
League. I would never let him go.”
“But it’s not in my hands. My perfect scenario is that he stays with
us, I think he belongs to this club, this club belongs to his history
and to his life, too.”
“He is a fantastic keeper, fantastic
dressing room and squad man. I tried to prove the respect I have for
him. I played him in the cups, gave him matches in the Premier League. I can imagine that a 32 or 33 year old keeper feels young and feels the passion to play every game.”
The Cech deal would be a hugely popular move among Arsenal fans and
Chelsea are likely to grant him his wish because he has been such a
loyal servant.
Mourinho also claimed that he fears Chelsea could
miss out on the top four next season despite being runaway champions
this time.
When asked who will be next season’s title contenders, Mourinho said:
“I would say the same five, I don’t know what Tottenham is going to do
in this summer.”
“But for sure, of these five teams anyone can be
champions, anyone can finish fifth so I have to make sure we finish top
four. Next season we have to finish in the top four.”
