Liverpool get James Milner as he snubs Arsenal on free transfer

James Milner will quit Manchester City to join Liverpool on a free transfer. Milner is ready to choose Liverpool over Arsenal, despite the Reds failure to make the Champions League, because he believes he will have more opportunities to play his favourite central midfield role.

Although the England international - who is out of contract at the end of the season - cannot officially decide his future until after next Sunday’s final game, it is understood he wants to sign for Liverpool.

Liverpool are prepared to offer the midfielder a contract worth around £100,000-a-week to make him one of their top earners next season.

Milner, 29, is also attracted to Liverpool because he will not have to uproot his young family when he leaves the Etihad.

Brendan Rodgers is keen on Milner and feels the former Aston Villa and Newcastle star could help plug the huge hole in the heart of his midfield, which will be left by the departing Steven Gerrard.

Milner has become frustrated at City because he has been repeatedly played out of position. He joined from Villa in 2010 as a central midfielder, but has been shunted out to the flanks and even played up front for part of this season.

Milner is happy with the terms offered by City, but is reluctant to spend his remaining peak years playing out of position.
