Cote d’Ivoire defeat Super Eagles in UAE friendly

Salomon Kalou’s second-half goal was enough for Cote d’Ivoire to beat Nigeria 1-0 in an international friendly match, played at the Zayed Sports City Stadium, Abu Dhabi on Sunday evening.

Daniel Amokachi took charge of a largely home-based Super Eagles, while the Ivorians paraded all their stars, who will be at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

APC accuses Jonathan of blocking Lagos light rail project

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused President Goodluck Jonathan of being hypocritical over his persistent claim of reviving the railway when he has bluntly refused to grant the necessary right-of-way approval to the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Authority (LAMATA) for the construction of its redline light rail project from Iddo to Ifo in Ogun State with a capacity to carry one million passengers per day.

Jonathan visits Obasanjo today

Barring any last minute change in plan, President Goodluck Jonathan will on Monday (today), visit former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his Abeokuta, Ogun State residence.

The meeting will come less than 48hours after Obasanjo made a surprise appearance at the wedding service of Jonathan’s foster daughter, Inebharapu, at the National Christian Centre, Abuja.

Political violence raged in parts of the country on Sunday with an explosion rocking the All Progressives Congress secretariat in Abam Ama, Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Just as the news of the explosion hit Port Harcourt, another round of violence was recorded in Rumueme, Obio/Akpor LGA where four APC members were machetted by persons believed to be political thugs.

Nigeria in trouble if PDP wins again — Buhari

The All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, (retd.), on Saturday warned that Nigeria would be in trouble if the Peoples Democratic Party wins the 2015 elections.

Buhari gave the warning while addressing a campaign rally at the Michael Okpara Square in Enugu.

He told the gathering that it would be a mistake if they failed to vote out the PDP.

APC South-East hails Buhari’s promise to revamp coal

Buhari had while flagging off his presidential campaign in Enugu on Saturday, promised to revamp the abandoned coal deposits in the State and use it for electricity generation in the South-East zone.

Ahead of the February 14 presidential election, the Unity Party of Nigeria says it has not adopted any presidential candidate.
 
The National Secretary of the party, Alhaji Abubakar Sokoto, clarified this in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday.
 
“The Leadership of the Unity Party of Nigeria did not authorise the suspended National Chairman nor direct any official of the party at any level to commit the party to support any presidential candidate,’’ it said.
 
The suspended UPN National Chairman, Dr Frederick Fasehun, was alleged to have recently endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan as the party’s presidential flag bearer for the poll.

K-Solo and Timaya reunite after 4 years.

The long-standing rift between two figures on the Nigerian music scene has just been resolved. 

Dancehall star, Timaya and music producer, K-solo had not seen eye-to-eye in the last 4 years due to a hitherto lingering beef. 

At the very beginning, Timaya’s music career kicked off with K –Solo who produced his monster hit single, ‘Dem Mama’. K-solo went on to produce the bulk of Timaya’s debut album, True Story and his contributions to his second and third albums, Gift and Grace and De Rebirth was quite significant as well before both stars went their separate ways.

NBC imposes restriction on airing of Lil Kesh’s ‘Shoki’

In a letter to all broadcast houses dated January 7, 2015, the NBC (Nigerian Broadcasting Commission) has ordered that the song ‘Shoki’ remix by Lil Kesh featuring Olamide and Davido be played only during watershed periods between 10pm and 5am. 

Never mind that the song has been in circulation for months, the statement according to the NBC states that the song: ‘contains some connotations of foul impressions that could corrupt the sensibilities of the impressionable underage.’

Troops foil terrorists’ attempt to occupy Damaturu

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has said that the Nigerian troop is currently performing a mopping up operation in Damaturu, Yobe State, after it repelled moves by Boko Haram to capture some parts of the town.

The Defence Headquarters said: “Troops are on mopping up operation around Damaturu after successfully foiling and containing the terrorists’ attempt to occupy parts of the town,” noting that the terrorists had launched massive attack from different directions of the town on Friday evening, but troops were promptly mobilised to repel the attack that lasted the night resulting in heavy casualty on the terrorists before the rest of them retreated.  

Hoodlums set Jonathan campaign vehicle ablaze in Jos

As Nigerians pray for a violence-free elections, some group of hoodlums on Saturday in Jos, Plateau State, descended on a campaign vehicle branded with the poster of President Goodluck Jonathan and set it ablaze.

It was learnt that the hoodlums numbering about 50 waylaid the vehicle at about 6:00 pm at Zololo junction along Bauchi road in Jos North Local Government Area of the state and beat the five occupants blue black before they set the vehicle ablaze.

Northern leaders express concerns over Buhari’s health

INDICATIONS have emerged that prominent Northern leaders and elders who had initially declared support for the candidacy of General Muhammadu Buhari in the February elections have started reconsidering their position, following alarms that the general might be suffering a serious health challenge.

Online channels had last week indicated that Buhari collapsed during the presidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Calabar, Cross River State.

Though the party had denied the report, it was learnt that the development had immediately prompted meetings among top hierarchy of the Northern political establishment to review the Buhari situation.

10-year-old suicide bomber kills 20 in Borno

AT least 20 people have been killed, with about 18 others injured by a bomb attack in the North-Eastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri. The suicide bomber was said to be a girl, whose age could not be more than 10 years according to reports from sources which include residents, journalists and security operatives. The account was later corroborated by the police.

The explosion, which occurred at about 12:20 pm yesterday, at the Maiduguri poultry market is coming less than six weeks after the same market was hit by suicide bombers. 

Though no group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, witnesses say all the signs point to the militant Islamist group, Boko Haram.
